📓 THE INDEX LAYER — ENTRY 007

🎭 The Mistake of Assuming People Are Naive

Written by Samuel ✍️

🎭 Right...

Here's an observation I've been sitting with for quite some time.

I think we often underestimate people.

Not their intelligence.

Their awareness.

Some people are genuinely naive.

Absolutely.

I'm not denying that.

I simply don't think they're the majority.

Increasingly...

I've come to believe that many people know far more than they let on.

The question isn't always:

"Do they know?"

Sometimes...

it's simply:

"Will they acknowledge it?"

👀 Awareness...

Often Hides In Plain Sight

Human beings notice an astonishing amount.

They notice:

who looked at them.

Who ignored them.

Who smiled.

Who didn't.

Who seemed interested.

Who appeared uncomfortable.

Who complimented them.

Who criticised them.

Most people read a room far better than they pretend.

What changes...

is whether they openly acknowledge what they've already noticed.

Sometimes...

acting oblivious is simply more convenient.

🧠 We Are Constantly Communicating

Here's something I've increasingly come to believe.

Everything communicates.

Not just words.

The way we dress.

The way we speak.

The way we stand.

The way we respond to disagreement.

The way we walk into a room.

The way we laugh.

The way we spend money.

The way we treat people.

Even silence...

communicates something.

None of these things tell you everything about someone.

But together...

they begin telling a story.

👕

Appearance...

Communicates

People should wear whatever they want.

Genuinely.

I couldn't care less.

Freedom of choice matters.

This isn't really about permission.

It's about communication.

I've often heard people say:

"I dress entirely for myself."

Perhaps that's true.

Perhaps it isn't.

Perhaps...

like most human behaviour...

the answer sits somewhere in the middle.

My observation is that many people enjoy positive attention.

Compliments.

Feeling attractive.

Feeling confident.

Feeling noticed.

There is nothing shameful about that.

We're human.

Positive validation generally feels good.

What I've become less convinced by...

is the idea that our appearance communicates nothing.

I simply don't think that's how people work.

Maybe I'm wrong.

But that's the pattern I've observed.

👁️ The Gaze...

Isn't One Thing

People often talk about "the male gaze."

As though it exists in only one form.

I don't think it does.

There is respectful attention.

Someone briefly noticing another person's appearance...

then continuing with their day.

That's normal.

Then there is the other kind.

The uncomfortable kind.

The invasive kind.

The disrespectful kind.

Persistent staring.

Objectification.

Harassment.

Those aren't the same thing.

They shouldn't be treated as though they are.

People should never be harassed because of how they dress.

Ever.

That responsibility belongs entirely to the person behaving badly.

At the same time...

I also think it's unrealistic to pretend appearance has no influence whatsoever on how people perceive us.

Human beings notice each other.

They always have.

They probably always will.

🧩 Patterns...

Matter More Than Moments

One outfit...

doesn't define someone.

Neither does one sentence.

Or one decision.

Or one conversation.

Individually...

each may mean almost nothing.

Together...

they begin painting a picture.

The way someone dresses.

The way they speak.

The way they treat strangers.

The way they behave when nobody is watching.

The way they respond to criticism.

The promises they keep.

The habits they repeat.

The company they choose.

Every individual detail...

may not matter very much.

Together...

they often paint a picture.

Sometimes beautiful.

Sometimes ugly.

Usually...

somewhere in between.

🎭 Honesty...

Begins With Ourselves

Perhaps the mistake isn't assuming people are dishonest.

Perhaps it's assuming people are completely unaware.

I don't think most people are.

I think many of us understand ourselves...

more than we sometimes admit.

We know when we're showing off.

We know when we're trying to impress someone.

We know when we're protecting our pride.

The difficult part...

is admitting it.

Not because admitting it is dangerous.

Because admitting it often makes us uncomfortable.

🧠 Reflection...

Is Usually More Interesting Than Denial

I've found people become much easier to understand...

once you stop assuming everyone is either completely innocent...

or completely manipulative.

Reality is usually somewhere between those extremes.

People are complicated.

Motives are rarely singular.

Most decisions come from several reasons...

not just one.

Which is why I suspect they simply understand more than they're willing to acknowledge.

⚖️ Self-Awareness...

Is Rarely Perfect

Perhaps the most interesting part...

is that none of us are completely objective about ourselves.

We all have blind spots.

We all justify certain decisions.

We all create explanations that sound better than the reality.

Sometimes intentionally.

Sometimes without even realising it.

Human beings are remarkably good...

at explaining themselves...

after the decision has already been made.

That doesn't make us dishonest.

It makes us...

human.

🧠 Observation...

Should Come Before Judgement

One thing I've learned...

is to watch longer.

People reveal themselves over time.

Not all at once.

The internet often encourages instant conclusions.

One clip.

One photograph.

One tweet.

One conversation.

Suddenly...

an entire personality has apparently been understood.

I'm not convinced that's how people work.

Understanding usually takes longer.

Which is inconvenient.

Reality often is.

📌 Final Thoughts

Perhaps I'm wrong.

Perhaps my observations only reflect the people I've encountered.

That's entirely possible.

I'm simply documenting what I've noticed.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

If I've learned anything...

it's this.

People communicate constantly.

Sometimes intentionally.

Sometimes unconsciously.

Sometimes honestly.

Sometimes strategically.

One moment...

rarely tells you much.

Patterns...

often tell you considerably more.

At least...

that's the picture they've painted to me.

And perhaps...

the mistake isn't believing some people are malicious.

Perhaps...

the bigger mistake...

is believing they're completely unaware.

Human behaviour...

has fascinated people for thousands of years.

Psychologists study it.

Writers document it.

Everyone notices it.

Nobody fully understands it.

Perhaps that's why it's so interesting.

Every person is a collection of stories...

habits...

contradictions...

and decisions.

Trying to understand them...

isn't about reaching certainty.

It's about becoming a little more observant than we were yesterday. 🎭
