📓 THE INDEX LAYER — ENTRY 004

🐈 Why Cats Knock Things Off Tables

Written by Samuel ✍️

🐈 Right...

Let's discuss something...

that every cat owner has experienced.

You're sitting peacefully.

The room is quiet.

Everything is exactly where you left it.

Then...

you hear it.

Tap...

Tap...

Tap...

...

CLUNK.

Your cat...

has just introduced your favourite object...

to gravity.

Again.

👀 It Always Starts With...

One Paw

Notice something.

Cats rarely launch objects immediately.

No.

That would be far too straightforward.

Instead...

they gently tap it.

Once.

Twice.

Maybe three times.

They're conducting what appears to be...

a highly scientific investigation.

Questions being asked include:

"Will this move?"

"Will the human react?"

"Will physics continue functioning today?"

🧠 Curiosity...

With Whiskers

Cats are naturally curious.

They learn by interacting with things.

Humans usually ask questions.

Cats...

conduct experiments.

Unfortunately...

the experiment often involves your mug.

🎯 Sometimes...

It's Personal

Have you noticed...

the object they choose...

is almost never random?

Not the empty plastic bottle.

Not the old newspaper.

No.

It's usually...

your glasses.

Your headphones.

Your phone.

Or the expensive thing you specifically hoped they'd ignore.

Remarkable instincts.

Entirely unhelpful.

😂 They Know You're Watching

This part fascinates me.

Sometimes...

they'll make direct eye contact first.

Then...

very slowly...

extend one paw...

towards the edge.

Almost as if asking:

"You seeing this?"

You are.

You absolutely are.

Neither of you intends to stop what's about to happen.

📦 Gravity...

Remains Undefeated

The object falls.

The cat watches.

Sometimes...

they even lean over the edge...

just to confirm.

Excellent.

Gravity still works.

Today's research has concluded successfully.

🤔 The Human Response

Humans react in predictable ways.

"No."

"Stop."

"Seriously?"

Cats hear these sounds...

carefully process them...

and immediately continue being cats.

Communication has occurred.

Agreement has not.

🐾 The Real Mystery

Here's the strange part.

Even after witnessing this behaviour dozens of times...

we still leave important things near the edge.

Who's really repeating the same mistake?

The cat...

or us?

That's a slightly uncomfortable question.

📌 Final Thoughts

Cats don't wake up each morning thinking:

"Today...

I shall inconvenience my human."

Probably.

They're simply curious.

Unfortunately...

their curiosity occasionally results in your belongings...

becoming briefly airborne.

Such is life.

When you choose to live with a tiny furry scientist.
