📓 THE INDEX LAYER — ENTRY 002
🚀 What Would Actually Happen if Earth Stopped Spinning?
Written by Samuel ✍️
🌍 Right...
Let's imagine something completely reasonable.
The Earth...
just...
stops spinning.
Not gradually.
Not over millions of years.
Just...
today.
No warning.
No countdown.
Someone somewhere presses the cosmic pause button.
What actually happens?
😶 First of All...
We...
would probably stop having problems.
Mainly because...
we'd become one.
The Earth rotates at roughly 1,670 km/h (1,037 mph) at the equator.
You don't notice it...
because everything else is moving with you.
The moment the Earth stopped...
you wouldn't.
💨 Congratulations...
You're Still Moving
The planet stopped.
Your momentum didn't.
Everything not firmly attached to bedrock...
cars,
trees,
buildings,
planes,
and people...
would continue travelling eastward at enormous speed.
Which is a very unfortunate way of discovering Newton was absolutely right.
🌊 Then The Oceans Remember Physics
Water...
isn't particularly interested in staying where you left it.
The oceans currently bulge slightly around Earth's equator because of the planet's rotation.
Remove the spinning...
and the water starts redistributing itself.
Some places would flood.
Others would suddenly find themselves much farther from the sea than expected.
Beachfront property becomes...
a complicated conversation.
🌬️ The Wind Gets Personal
The atmosphere wouldn't politely stop either.
It would continue moving.
Very...
very...
quickly.
Imagine winds travelling faster than most aircraft.
At that point...
an umbrella becomes less of a weather accessory...
and more of an optimistic suggestion.
☀️ Days Become...
Different
Assuming Earth somehow remained orbiting the Sun...
but no longer rotated...
One side of the planet would spend months facing sunlight.
The other...
months in darkness.
Half the planet complains it's too hot.
The other half...
can't find the Sun.
🤔 Humanity Would Still Argue
This part fascinates me.
Even after all that...
someone somewhere would probably still post:
"Actually...
it's not that bad where I live."
Another person would reply:
"Source?"
Humans remain committed to debate...
regardless of planetary circumstances.
🚀 Final Thoughts
Thankfully...
Earth has shown no interest in stopping.
Which is reassuring.
Because I'd quite like the furniture...
and myself...
to remain approximately where we currently are.

Postscript
Fortunately...
the Earth has continued rotating for approximately 4.5 billion years.
I'd personally encourage it to maintain that habit.
It seems to be working rather well.🌍
